When I was at university, every night there was at least one concert—and sometimes two or three. Almost every band that played was a rock band.(4)Most of the bands were unknown and some came from Europe or the US. The halls were small, so the tickets were cheap. This meant my friends and I could go to see a band just for fun whenever we wanted to. The atmosphere at a rock concert full of students is great. Everyone goes pretty crazy.(5)Most people drink beer and sing along with the band. It’s easy to get close to the band. The rooms are crowded, noisy and smelly. People jump up and down with the music and knock into each other. The UK has always had a lot of rock music. It’s loud with guitars and drums. Most of the bands that play at university are not famous. They are just a group of friends who play part-time and struggle to make money. Even the UK’s really famous rock bands, such as Oasis, started by touring around small halls at universities. After the concerts, band members and their friends stand outside selling T-shirts or CDs. After three years of university, half of my wardrobe was made up of clothes from those concerts. Many of my friends were also in bands—or wanted to be. Posts on the student notice boards advertised bands looking for new members.(6)Many famous bands were formed at university by friends who shared a passion for music.
