(23)There’s a famous joke postcard of New York, showing a Manhattan street view in each of the four seasons. The joke is that each image is the same. It isn’t quite fair to the city, but it does make me understand the sharp difference of the seasons where I live, upstate in the CK Mountains. Each season has its charms, and I’d find it hard to choose between them though our autumn leaves still lay the floor every year with its beautiful pinks and oranges.
(24)But since turning 50 I’ve noticed one new thing about myself. That is I’m reacting more sensitively to heat and cold than I used to. The winters here are long and hard. For a long five months there’s the daily possibility of snow, sleet, ice and freezing rain. It’s all very good and I wouldn’t change it for the world, but the constant battle with the cold weather is hard, and after a while the body—or my body—desires desperately for some warmth.
April is the one month that neither drags nor rushes. The weather’s still cold, but the greenish grass on the mountainside tells you winter is leaving, while the occasional warm day gives you a magical taste of warm things to come.(25)Magical because nothing is becoming less: the store of real heat and warm days still wait for you, far away and fully safe. That is the reason why I think April is the best month.
