答案    1 I once had, fairly recently actually, a really interesting discussion with my Financial Management teacher about the kind of job I wanted to do post graduation. For the last few years, I have wanted to work in a bank. Mainly because, in China, it is considered to be a very stable job and one that you would have for your entire career. My teacher is an Englishman from London who has considerable experience in the financial industry and, in particular, banking. I thought he would be the perfect person to throw some ideas around with.
He opined that the banking industry is a good, solid, firm area in which to work and would be an excellent choice for my future. He said that I should continue to work hard and make sure my mathematical abilities are top notch. He also gave me some ideas about what type of job I could get in banking. I had no idea that there were so many.
I wouldn’t say I found it interesting, as such, more like thoroughly fascinating and, in that 15-minute chat, I probably learnt more about banking than I had in the last 6 months. His expertise and experience I found to be most enlightening and it gave me a lot to think about. I think I want to move towards to the Auditing side of banking rather than something like loans and sales, but I have yet to really make up my mind. I feel a little like a kid in a sweet shop, so much choice that I actually can’t make a decision. I just want to have my cake and eat it.
2 Well, I actually had a really interesting conversation with my English teacher yesterday. It was about me studying in England during my final year at university. Obviously, I’m current hoping to get a good score in my IELTS, so that I can go in about a year’s time and I wanted to know more about what I can expect from English people with regard to their culture, food and the like.
My English teacher is from London, but has been here in China for over 13 years, so he really understands the differences between the two countries, and I wanted to pick his brains about what he learnt. I wanted to understand the ins and outs of a regular person’s life. You know, what they do for fun, family life, hopes and dreams.
He told me that English and Chinese people are actually very similar. I think this is because he is the type of person that looks for similarities and common ground rather than differences. He explained that their hopes and dreams were exactly the same as people here: they want to have a good job, own a house, have a family and be healthy. It was a bit of a surprise to me, but once he said it, I knew it to be true. The UK apparently, has a large drinking culture, even the women go to the pub and get drunk. I’m not sure if he was kidding about this, but I don’t think so. Of course people drink here too, but generally just with their family or friends and nearly always at dinner. Going out just for a drink is a bit alien to me.
I think I found it interesting, almost surprising, because he didn’t give me the answers I expected. I’m not sure exactly what I was waiting for, but it was a pleasant awakening and a lovely conversation. I really got to practice my English.
