I’d like to describe a writing lesson that I attended at my university last semester.
The lesson was about academic writing. It was held for all the third-year students because we were required to write a graduation thesis next year. I thought it would be very boring, but it turned out to be very interesting.
The lesson was interesting because it was given by more than one lecturer. In all the other lessons that I’d attended, there was only one lecturer. But in this writing lesson, three lecturers were invited to teach us. They all came from different backgrounds, one of which was a professor from my department. He talked about issues such as choosing a thesis topic, writing literature reviews and doing experiments. Through his talk, I understood the basic process of doing research. The second lecturer was from the School of Foreign Languages. He came to talk about writing English abstracts. In our university, you need an English abstract for your thesis if you want to pass. So, the lecturer told us the function and some basic structures of an English abstract. The third lecturer was a staff in the library. He talked about how to make use of the resources in the library, including searching for books and electronic journals, using software for research and other services of the library. I learnt a lot from them. I think this lesson indeed taught students how to begin doing research. I also think this interesting way of teaching could be applied to other subjects.
