It’s quite interesting to think of an important letter that I’ve received. These days, it’s really rare to receive a letter, carefully folded in an envelope and delivered to me with my name on it.
When I was 7 years old, I had to go to hospital to have my tonsils taken out! I was very frightened. To make things worse, I needed to stay in the hospital on my 8th birthday. At that age, I’d never received any letters and certainly never had I expected to receive any mail while I was ill. So it was a wonderful surprise that one morning, I was given an envelope with my name and address beautifully handwritten on it. And it bore a stamp from overseas in the top right-hand corner. I was so exhilarated!
The letter was from my uncle Peter. He was living in America at that time, and I was in China. The special letter he sent was for my birthday. That astounded me enough, but what really impressed me was the content of the letter. He said he’d love to send me a birthday cake, but that wasn’t practical considering the distance, so instead, he drew me a vivid picture of an amazing birthday cake and a party with balloons and presents.
I was in awe! He was actually quite a good artist, so his illustration was really marvelous. The letter cheered me up and made me feel so special. I kept it for quite a long time, but sadly one day I couldn’t find it anywhere. I think it must have been thrown out at some point. Even so, I think this letter is very important to me.
