答案
Some people think that television occupies too much of people’s time that they neglect communication with their friends and family. I think that this is an exaggeration. In my opinion, whether or not television destroys communication depends on what type of program is being viewed. More importantly, it depends on the type of viewers.
I think all the TV programs can be classified into two types: empty programs and educational programs. Empty programs do not challenge people. They have just enough storyline to keep people switching from one channel to another, while educational programs may teach viewers a lesson. There are also passive and active viewers. A passive viewer will just watch television without thinking about what he is seeing. The combination of an empty program and a passive viewer makes communication impossible. Passive viewers just continue to watch, actually enjoying the fact that they don’t continue to think. They won’t break away to talk about the programs with their friends and family. Even with good programs, passive viewers still won’t think or communicate much. They probably prefer empty programs because good programs invoke too much work.
On the other hand, active viewers usually watch educational programs. They always like to share what they see with their friends and family. "Educational" doesn’t necessarily mean documentaries. For example, BBS provides dramas with realistic relationships or action shows with clever plotlines. When active viewers watch programs, they have ideas and talk about them with others. Good programs inspire them to change their thinking and their lives. Unlike passive viewers, they don’t want to watch endlessly and aimlessly without thinking.
Television may destroy communication among passive viewers, but not active viewers. Only those whose purpose is to kill time by watching TV will not communicate. For active viewers, watching TV may instead arouse their communication with their friends and family.
