问题 You will now listen to a conversation. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Question: The speaking discusses two possible solutions to the woman’s problem. Describe the problem and the two solutions. Then state which of the two solutions you prefer and explain why.
M: Selena, where are you running off to in such a hurry?
W: Oh hey, Chad. I have a big problem about apartment renting.
M: Tell me about it. Maybe I can help.
W: I found this nice apartment where my friend Casey and I could live. The price is fine and it’s near campus. In fact, I’m supposed to go sign the lease today. But on my way to the bank, I found an even better, bigger, and closer one!
M: All right, I am listening.
W: Well this apartment is about 20% more expensive. If I don’t want to lose this chance, I have to sign the lease right away.
M: So just sign it. You like the apartment, don’t you?
W: The problem is my roommate. She went hiking for a week. Neither her computer nor her mobile phone works during this time. I really can’t make her pay more money. I don’t know if she can afford to pay more rent. She’s always worried about money.
M: Well, then just go with the first apartment, the cheaper one.
W: But the other apartment is so perfect!
M: You only have two choices. Choose one or the other. Life isn’t usually perfect, Selena.
W: But, but.. .I want that bigger apartment so much.

答案 The woman in the conversation faces a problem that she wants to pay more to rent a bigger apartment which is closer to campus: however, she cannot make the decision without asking her roommate, because her roommate might not be willing to pay a lot of money for the rent. The worst thing is that she cannot reach her roommate at the moment.
There are two solutions.
The first one is to just sign the lease right away. And the other one is to keep to her original plan and rent the cheaper one.
Personally speaking, I prefer the first solution, because the young woman loves the more expensive apartment. But since her roommate doesn’t want to pay more for the lease, she could bear the responsibility and secretly pay more rent. She is changing an agreement on her own, so she should pay for the price. Her roommate won’t be upset.
Personally speaking, I believe the woman should stick to the original plan and rent a cheaper apartment, because her roommate cares about money and is not willing to pay more for the rent. If the woman makes the decision without asking her, she might be very upset. Plus, the rent is cheaper and they can save some money for other important things.

解析     Task 5的重点是学生遇到的困难跟解决的途径。具体到这道题,Selena面临的问题是她想换租房,但是却联系不到室友,不能征求室友的意见。重点在于如何fix the problem,而不是解释原因。开头段可简单介绍原因:“She wants to pay more to rent a bigger apartment which is closer to campus,”但是“she cannot make the decision without asking her roommate, because her roommate might not be willing to pay a lot of money for the rent. The worst thing is that she cannot reach her roommate at the moment.”
