City cluster has been widely used in the world since the famous French economist Professor Gottmann put forward this concept in 1957. At present, China has also entered the stage of city cluster development. The development of city clusters is the result of urbanization at a higher stage, so what are the features for city cluster development in China?
First, the population will spill over from the core cities to smaller cities in the surrounding region. In the process of urbanization, the population concentrate in the center of big cities, but these big cities have limited space and can’t accommodate that many people. Therefore, the population will begin to move from the big cities to the surrounding regions resulting in their faster population growth.
Second, inter-district commuting. As the central city and its neighboring towns enjoy closer social and economic ties, there will be large scale of inter-district commuting. Satellite cities around the core cities will absorb population and industry, with a large number of labor force commuting between the center of the metropolitan area and the surrounding regions. Take Beijing city cluster as an example, more than 360,000 people work in Beijing and live in the areas around Beijing, with Sanhe, Gu’an and Guangyang taking up the largest share. Now people don’t necessarily have to work where they live, and the integration process of metropolitan areas enables the free movement of people, goods and capital at a larger scale.
