Passage One:
In 1998,1 moved across to marketing. This was a big step for me. I was sent to Michigan for a year, and then worked out in Singapore with our Far East headquarters until 2001. I was in charge there of marketing planning for the Far East. Good years, they were. In 2001 I came back to the UK, and became the assistant marketing director. My director retired in 2003 and I took his place. We plan to develop our food processing activities in Eastern Europe and Russia. The problems they now face there in food distribution create a good market opportunity for us.
Passage Two:
I came into economics asking the question, "What makes for a good society?" And that means, what makes for good public policy, and also, what’s the role of a government? It’s clear that a government has a tremendous role to play. A stable government provides real law, is self-disciplined and self-limiting according to law, provides a stable set of monetary and financial institutions so the money really means something, and helps to create an environment of knowledge and innovation in this society. It also guarantees the access to education, primary health and so forth.
