   Employing training methods then regarded as revolutionary, intensive weight training and grulling runs up steep sand dunes, Elliot shattered the world mile record and won a Commonwealth double reward for the mile and 880 yards (804 metres) events at the 1958 Cardiff Games.
   His finest hour came m the 1960 Rome Olympics where he led from start to finish in the 1,500-metre final to win by an extraordinary 20-metre margin in a world record three minutes 35.6 seconds.
