The British Government ministers are worried about allegations that they allowed arms and equipment to be supplied to Iraq. American officials must be similarly concerned. In Britain the affair took on a fresh lease of life when the case against the three Matrix Churchill executives was dropped because a former government Minister said he had known about their dealings with Iraq. The Government announced an Official Inquiry but this has failed to calm the storm. Opposition Members of Parliament are calling for an emergency debate and threatening to make more damaging revelations. There are striking similarities between the Matrix Churchill case and that of Christopher Dragool, an American banker accused of masterminding a campaign to supply Iraq with thousands of millions of dollars of illegal credits which Iraq used to finance its military buildup. Like the 3 British businessmen, Mr. Dragool, who managed a branch of an Italian bank in Atlanta, thought he was acting with government approval. Congressioal   investigators say their inquiries into the affair have been blocked by numerous government bodies including the Justice Department. One of those investigators, Dennis Kane, of the House Banking Committee, told the BBC that there was no way British and American policies towards Iraq could have been conducted without close co-ordination. The two governments, he said, worked together to keep the arms network going in order to gather intelligence information on what Iraq was doing.
