   A recent exhibition of children paintings held in Nanjing has shocked the whole nation, because almost all the children portrayed the sky in the paintings in gray or black. To these children the once crystalline blue sky no longer exists.
   The whole world is experiencing the worst ever environmental crisis. China is no exception. Over the past two decades we have suffered from ever more deteriorating pollution and ecological Imbalance. We discharge sewage into rivers, lakes and seas, contaminating Nature’s lifeblood. We cut down trees and forests, inducing soil erosion, which accounts for the disastrous flooding in 1998. We hunt animals for fur and meat, putting many of them on the ever-enlarging list of endangered species. And we allow smoke and fumes to be emitted from industries and vehicles to block our vision of the blue sky. All this is rooted in a lack of environmental awareness, for while striving for a faster economic development it seldom occurs to us that it has been gained at huge costs. By sacrificing environment, we are not only putting our own health and lives at stake, but also harming the far-reaching interests of our children.
   Now that the new millennium begins, we need a new Enlightenment to awaken those who are still oblivious to environmental degradation. Serious measures should be taken to set limits on the smog emission or waste discharge, to solve the problem of garbage disposal, to curb the growth of polluting industries...
   To save our mother earth, and to save ourselves and our future generations as well, there are a thousand and one things we should do. We should pledge and honour our promise that our children will enjoy the delightful sight of the blue sky forever.
