The German Parliament will shortly hold a vote of confidence in Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s government with Mr. Schroeder pushing for a defeat to allow him to hold early elections. Mr. Schroeder wants to hold elections a year earlier than scheduled to win a fresh mandate after his party was beaten in regional polls in May. P. A is an opposition Christian democrat M. P., he says this is a bad time for German politics.
   "For the first time, a government is collectively and deliberately resigning from power. This is without precedents and we are now in a situation that we have to present an alternative of breakdown for economic recovery in Germany to deal with the economic and social problems of the country. It’s so damaging to the creditability of the political advance in our country. And this is of course a problem for everybody."
