The judge has warned young women criminals that they cannot hope to avoid jail sentence by deliberately becoming pregnant between the time of their arrest and their appearance in court. The comments by judge James Pinkies at Wakefield Crown Court in the north of England came as he sentenced an unmarried 19-year-old mother to six months detention for theft. He said he was not suggesting that she deliberately became pregnant to avoid imprisonment. But the court had to give a clear message that having a baby would not stop the law from being applied fairly. The mother will not be separated from her 10-week-old baby while in custody. The opposition Labor Party Home Affair spokesman criticized the judge and said the sentence was a sad day for British justice and an insult to women throughout the country.
