Where Should Children be Educated?
Although there is much argument on whether children should have conventional schooling or should be educated at home, which is aroused by a 12-year-old college student reported in a newspaper, and there rises a trendiness of job-quitting mothers determined to devote to their children’s bringing-up, nobody can draw a conclusion with confidence that children should be taught at home or at any children’s institutions. There are many different children and every one may require education suitable only for him. And I would take the ground that for most children the best place for learning about life is in the children’s institutions or schools.
In the first place, there is no denying that contacts between children of the same age are essential for the growth of children. Such a contact is indispensable for playing, entertaining, learning and living together with other people. How to get along well with other people is the first lesson for any one to take in his up-bringing, and the lack of this ability sets problems and troubles for his later development. By playing and communicating with their peers, it’s much easier for children to develop and cultivate their characters and interpersonal skills. However, the children who always stay at home may become more solitary and even suffer from certain mental illnesses because of the separation from companions of the same age.
Besides, educational institutions can offer a better chance for a child to acquire knowledge with a more systematic teaching of subjects such as math, Chinese, English, physics, chemistry, biology and so on. Being educated in this environment, children can develop into all-round students. Meanwhile, schools also provide their students a platform where children can get in touch with the greatest minds of human beings, such as Aristotle, Chaucer, Einstein, and so like. But for the parents, no matter how excellent they are in their professional fields, they are not masters of all kinds of knowledge that is necessary for their children to learn.
At last, good study habit can be better formed at schools. Children who study at home are easily affected by the lure of the TV programs or computer games, while children in school will, with teachers’ guidance, gradually cultivate a scientific and efficient study habit, which could benefit them for a life-long time.
With all the concerns above, we may take no risk in drawing a conclusion that, although parents are supposed to devote much more time and energy to their children, they are less experienced and knowledgeable in how to educate and supervise children, compared with professional teachers working in kindergartens or schools. Therefore, schooling will be a better choice for the all-round development of children.
