According to the new research, the odd shape mounds were formed by______.
Scientists who’ve been studying oddly shaped rock formations in western Australia said it could be fossils from the earliest life on earth, microbes which flourished some 3.4 billon years ago. The scientists say that the different structures suggest that primitive life can quickly diversify, giving it better chance of developing on other planets. For decades scientists have argued about the meaning of rocky outcrops in western Australia called stromatolites. These odd shape mounds were believed by some to have been formed by chemical or geographical events. Others suggest that they were in fact created by ancient microbes. Now this research indicates that the formations are just too complex to have been formed by chemicals. A team of scientists studied thousands of stromatolites and were able to describe 7 different categories. According to the researchers, this proves that the formations weren’t random, but were in fact formed by microbes about 3.4 billion years ago.
