问题    The standard three-year master’s degree program in China was greatly challenged recently. Experts hold that two years is enough for the program. Tsinghua, Peking, Renmin and some other universities have started trying out the two year program in economics and management-related majors. Harbin University of Science and Technology was one of the first universities to try the new master’s system in 1994. Should the old system be changed? Explain your opinion and write an article of about 400 words on the following topic: Should the Traditional System Be Changed?
   In the first part of your writing you should present your thesis statement, and in the second part you should support the thesis statement with appropriate details. In the last part you should bring what you have written to a natural conclusion with a summary.

答案                    Should the Traditional System Be Changed?
   The standard three-year master’s degree program in China now faces great challenge. Nowadays, many people doubt the function and effectiveness of this system. Should we change the traditional program? In my opinion, the reform is necessary.
   First, the current system is a waste of time. In fact, in those developed countries such as UK and US, they take a system of one-year school study plus half-year social practice. Our problem is that we do not make full use of the three years. The usual practice is that we take graduates courses in the first one and half years, and the rest time is all devoted to preparing the dissertation. In fact, two-year student dissertations are not much different from those of three-year students. So we can see that our system is not so effective and we use three years to do what others can complete in only one year. And the most important thing is that not all the students are supposed to devote their lives into the professional careers which their majors determine. The students should have the rights to choose their future and the time they want to take. If the major is just the fundament of their social practice, they should have the right to choose to take less time.
   Another reason is that the traditional system goes against social need for persons with special abilities. In our educational system, graduate students are usually considered as the "social elite", and people put high expectations on them. But nowadays, many master’s programs are actually trying to cuttivatemanagement professionals. The changing goals have meant a change in study length. We should adjust our educational system in line with our social needs. The social development requires us to make our system more diversified.
   From above, we can see the current program should be reformed but we should not take the simple cut. It is wrong to talk of changing all those programs to two years and some experts are cautioning that the reforms should not be done hastily. It is a systematic work to make reforms on this system.
