问题     More and more classic or popular novels were made into TV series. Some people would like to spend more time reading original books, while others prefer to watch TV instead of reading. What’s your opinion about it? Write an essay of about 400 words.

答案             Watching TV Adaptation or Reading Original Books?
These days, there are many forms of entertainment for us to choose from. Watching TV adaptation and reading original books are two of the most popular ways for entertainment. I enjoy both of them, but given the choice, I usually prefer to read original books rather than watch TV adaptation for the following reasons.
First of all, we can read a novel at any time and at any place. We do not have to be in front of a TV set at a certain time. We can read even when we have only a few spare minutes, for example, while on a bus. We do not have to read the book from start to finish in one sitting. We can read anywhere because books are portable. If the weather is fine, we can take the book outdoors, and when it is raining we can go to a coffee bar.
Secondly, we can take a more active part when reading originals than when watching TV adaptation and get more detailed information. Reading is a process of active input and thinking. Readers have to reconstruct what they read in their mind since books, unlike TV adaptation, have no motional pictures. If they read a detective novel, for example, they have to create different roles’ images, actions, facial expressions and story plots in their heads by themselves. On the contrary, watching TV is recognized as a passive progress, during which TV audience just receive messages and pictures pre-digested by reporters and editors. When you’re watching a TV series, you’re a passive viewer. The TV series is giving you everything. It is no wonder that TV is called idiot box, for frequent and longtime TV viewing might turn the viewers into idiots by hampering their imagination.
Thirdly, reading helps readers appreciate beautiful expressions from the original books. Written materials are carefully polished before being published, so they contain elaborate grammatical structures, well-chosen words and strictly logic coherence. In contrast, TV programs often present spoken language which is coarse and disorderly. Therefore, there is usually no need or chance for the audience to learn expressions.
In conclusion, as far as I am concerned, reading original books is more enjoyable than watching TV adaptation for the former plays a more active and effective role in bringing imaginative ability into play. Just as the British philosopher Francis Bacon said, " Reading makes a full man. "
