答案             Should College Students Choose Their Own Roommates?
A hot topic recently is about a university that has begun to let students choose their own roommates. It has aroused different reactions among the public. As far as I’m concerned, it is not necessary to have students make their own decision while assigning dormitory.
First things first, admittedly students get along well with roommates of similar personality or living habits, but universities are the platform to develop not only academic abilities but also interpersonal skills. It is often said that universities are a microcosm of society. If students can learn how to deal with roommates of different personalities, it may easy for them to communicate with different people upon graduation so that they may get accustomed to the society in a short time. Thus, assigning dorms at random renders students the opportunity to cultivate their interpersonal skills.
What’s worse, what about students with unique personality who seem not be so sociable? If no one would like to share the dorm with those students, how would they feel? They may have psychological problems which may lead to serious consequences. It is reported that accidents involving campus violence have occurred from time to time, including the poisoning case at Tsinghua University years ago as well as the similar one at Fudan University recently. Therefore, having students choose their classmates may unknowingly cause psychological problems for other students, which could have been avoided by assigning dorms randomly.
Lastly, letting similar students live together is not the best medicine for conflicts between students. The best way to reduce disputes is to help them further understand each other by rendering them more chance to communicate with each other, and to impart them with interpersonal skills to prevent possible conflicts. For instance, universities can invite experts in that field to give lectures about interpersonal communication, or hold activities to provide a platform for students to better understand each other.
In short, the university’s good intention should be applauded, but at the same time, it ought to take other effective measures to help build a good relationship between students. Only in this way can all students enjoy a harmonious life on campus and yield abundant results during their college life.
