问题     Very few people can be happy unless on the whole their way of life and their outlook on the world are approved by those with whom they have social relations, and more especially by those with whom they live. Public opinion somehow shapes us as individuals as well as distinctive groups. How do you think one can be accepted by the public while at the same time maintaining the independence of one’s own? Write an essay of about 400 words on the following topic:

答案                 Follow Popular Ways and Stick to Principles
Young people are understandably and rightfully to worry that their way of life and their outlook on the world are compromised by public opinions or social conventions.  It is pitiful to cater to others all the time, while it is inevitable and sometimes even noble to take certain care_of others. It is respectable to uphold the truth and refuse to agree after giving serious thought. However, it is very hollow and worthless to avoid beings vulgar for the sake of not being vulgar.
First of all, holding to one’s principles does not entail doing what is in one’s heart, as people going with their heart give little thought before they act, whereas the principle of life calls for a clear sense of self. It is the mark of a senseless life for a person to think whether one is refined or vulgar, or whether one is fawning on the vulgar. Young people, especially, tend to lack a clear definition of their own; even for mature adults, the process of evolving one’s concept of self is a perpetual one. What’s more, to follow popular ways is not necessarily the equivalent of being mediocre or parroting the opinions of others, as most young adults probably assume. Admittedly, rule-breakers easily call attention to themselves, and some do leave the most memorable imprints in history by challenging the norms and traditions. Yet people who act without regard to consequences or social situations may offend and alienate others. Predominant in such examples are people who thought they were sticking to their principles only to find that they were doing what often amounted to impulsive overreaction based on emotion.
It is surely of no good to fawn on the vulgar, yet very few people can be happy unless on the whole their way of life and their outlook on the world are approved by those with whom they have social relations, and more especially by those with whom they live. Contrary to the belief that following popular ways means echoing the views of others, in most situations, however, adhering to one’s principles would be manifested as following popular ways. Then, how do we maintain our individuality and stick to our principles while as they say—inside the box? One should not take the phrase "follow your heart" freely or too literally, unless one’s instinct is to follow standard rules of social etiquette. And one shall act according to the order, as departing from the social norms and disregarding of others can harm oneself as well as constrain one’s own personal and professional growth.
