Language Historian Anne Curzan: There will certainly be changes in language that we don’t like simply because many of us don’t like change, but we should be less quick to impose our likes and dislikes about words on other people. Language change isn’t worrisome; it’s fun and fascinating. I hope everyone can enjoy being part of the creativity that is continually remaking our language and keeping it robust.
David Crystal, honorary professor of linguistics at the University of Bangor: The Internet is an amazing medium for languages. Language itself changes slowly but the Internet has speeded up the process of those changes so you notice them more quickly. Using word play to form groups and impress one’s peers is a fairly traditional activity. It’s like any badge of ability. If you go to a local skatepark you see kids whose expertise is making a skateboard do wonderful things. Online you show how brilliant you are by manipulating the language of the Internet.
Professor Crystal: The efforts made by those fluent in online tongues are admirable. They might not be reading Shakespeare and Dickens but they are reading and cooking up these amazing little games, and showing that they are very creative. I’m quite impressed with these words. However, language is a vital part of culture, which is solemn and serious. Language takes its present form after it has been selected by time and history. On the contrary, one of the main features of the new Internet words is random and accidental. The formation of those new words goes against the classic and traditional rules of word-formation. Therefore, once those words are included in our daily offline usage, the whole language system will be tempered and shattered.

Zhao Tong, dean of teaching-research section of Ancient Chinese Language in Renmin University of China: Some of the newly-sprung Internet words may arouse people’s interest when they come out at first. However, if the formation of the Internet words goes against the rules of forming Chinese words, they will have little chance to stay in the daily used vocabulary.
Wen Ruming, professor of Chinese Language in Peking University: I don’t think the newly-made Internet words will suppress the number of traditional standardized words and vocabulary. Those Internet words are very widely and popularly used on the Internet, but only a tiny portion of them are used off the Internet. So they won’t pose a threat to the traditional words. Instead, they can enrich our language thanks to their vivid interpretation of the meaning. I think only a few of the Internet words will become stable in our vocabulary.
Wang Jun: The new Internet words enlarge our vocabulary, but at the same time, they also harm our language. Language is a mobile system, changing constantly with the times. It’s absolutely fine to absorb new words with characteristics of different times. However, not all of them can be accepted. Many online words have bad connotations or imply vulgar interests, so they should be get rid of.

答案                 Views on the New Internet Words
Every year, hundreds of new words and phrases that come from the Internet are added to the daily usage. The Internet words have invited different views on their influence on the standard of language for their use in non-computer-mediated communication. People’s views vary greatly.
Some people embrace the new words originated online coming into our offline communication. To begin with, they consider the formation of the new Internet words creative and innovative. Languages evolve constantly and are supposed to involve all sources of new words, and it is the Internet that speeds up the evolution and enlarges the daily vocabulary. Besides, most of the new Internet words are fun and fascinating, therefore they cater to the young generation who are playing a vital role in the development of languages. However, many people disapprove of the usage of the new Internet words in offline communication. They argue that the new Internet words injure the solemnity of languages which represent the wisdom and intelligence of the people and culture. Secondly, some new Internet words suffer from bad connotations, harming the purity of the languages.
Weighing up the views from the two sides, I tend to agree with the former one. Firstly, I believe that the Internet allows better expressions of a language. Some people claim that the new Internet words lead to a degradation of the language standard. On the contrary, I don’t think there is any need to insist on standard language. Rather than established linguistic conventions, linguistic choices sometimes reflect personal taste. Secondly, using and spreading the new Internet words also add onto the cultural currency of a language. It is important to the speakers of the language due to the foundation it provides for identifying within a group, and also for defining a person’s individual linguistic and communicative competence. Last but not least, the new Internet words also embody the imprint of an age, and they are a legacy for later generations in terms of language development.
In a word, no matter whether you think the new Internet words vitalize or destroy languages, there’s no denying how revealing it is of the culture that invents and uses them—and the ease with which we adapt our language to new concepts.
