M: Welcome to our program. Students today learn how to use computers as early as age 5 or 6. They are also spending more time online, surfing the web, e-mailing, twittering, playing games, using Facebook, etc. Rumor has it that some even use the Internet to research term papers. (1) The question I’d like us to consider today is, are people spending too much time on their computers? Our honored guest today is Ms. Kate from National Psychiatrist Association.
W: Thank you. As you have just mentioned, some doctors believe that people nowadays spend too much time on the Internet and they sometimes misuse the Internet, the same way people drink too much or gamble too much. They call this problem Internet Addiction Disorder, or IAD for short.
M: Interesting. We even gained ourselves a new term for our indulgence in the Internet. But what are the symptoms of IAD?
W: The doctors have identified seven signs of Internet Addiction Disorder. The first sign is that a person wants more and more time on the Internet. One hour is not enough; it’s got to be two or three.
M: You are quite right. I have exactly the same feeling that time flies when you surf the Internet.
W: Well, the second sign relates to what happens to people if they cannot get on the Internet. (2) They might, um, dream about the Internet. During these dreams, their bodies might tremble, and their fingers might move as if they were typing.
M: Sounds like they were living in hallucination.
W: That is the exact word! The third sign is that they need to use the Internet to stop these things from happening to their bodies. (3) In the same way that a few drinks will steady an alcoholic, being on the Internet actually improves the way their bodies feel.
M: Sounds familiar. What a shame!
W: And fourth, (4) people with IAD use the Internet more often and stay online longer than they intended. For example, they might go online to check e-mail, but three or four hours later, they are still there, chatting or surfing the web, or whatever.
M: Like what I have said, time flies on the Internet. Sometimes, I go right into midnight over the Internet without any knowledge of it.
W: Yeah. And number five, people spend a large amount of time doing things related to the Internet. (5) They might, um, read books about the Internet, for instance, or download new Internet programs, or attend Internet-related conferences.
M: I bet these kinds of behavior not only cost a lot of time but also a big sum of money.
W: You can say that again. The sixth sign of IAD is that people substitute online time for social activities. Frankly, they prefer communicating electronically rather than face-to-face.
M: So have I noticed that there are fewer and fewer parties around.
W: Yes, and the last sign is that Internet use becomes more important than almost anything else— showering, schoolwork, losing a job, feeding children, and even eating yourself. People will also lie about how much time they are spending online, and they will keep using the Internet even if they are punished for it.
This is the end of Part One of the interview. Questions 1 to 5 are based on what you have just heard.
1. What is the interview mainly about?
2. What happens to the people with IAD if they can’t get on the Internet?
3. How does the woman explain the third sign of IAD?
4. What does the woman say about people with IAD using the Internet?
5. Which is NOT a thing related to the Internet people with IAD do?

选项 A、By comparing people with IAD to alcoholics.

C、By comparing people with IAD to coffee-drinkers.
D、By comparing people with IAD to patients with mental illness.
