Graduates
A 24-year-old job hunter interviewed, who wishes to remain anonymous: When two candidates with the similar ability compete for the same position, there’s no doubt that the interviewer will choose the prettier one. It is standard practice in China to enclose a picture with your CV. I have eyelid surgery, giving me a Western double-fold lid—a popular look in Asia—for £260. I believe the surgery has "really changed something" and will improve my chances of landing my dream job.
A 20-year-old administration graduate who recently had rhinoplasty: Surely it will help with job hunting and face-to-face interviews. Based on my own personal experience, it is true that it is easier for pretty girls to find and secure jobs.
Lydia Wang, a 22-year-old college senior; It took me years to make such a decision. Actually, I have disliked my eyes since I was in high school. I eventually made the decision to have my single-fold eyelids double folded early this month. The more beautiful a girl is, the easier it will be for her to get a good job.
Surgery doctors
Dr. Song from a plastic and cosmetic surgery clinic: It can definitely improve your prospects and competitive power. I believe surgery not only makes the most of your appearance, but also boosts self-esteem, which is the key to successful job hunting.
Ms Liu, from a plastic surgery hospital: Although we often say that you shouldn’t judge people by the way they look, good looks can really give you an advantage. Of course ability is one thing but appearance also really matters. Appearance is the first impression you give. Mostly it is about meeting their psychological needs to make them feel more confident.
Experts
Prof. Gu: Due to the tight job market and crummy economy, students are under a lot of pressures. That’s why they choose to have plastic surgery. I suggest that graduates concentrate on their inner beauty. Employers consider academic performance, inner qualities and communication skills more critical than the appearance. A breezy personality is more impressive than just a pretty face.
Prof. MaO: Graduates’ job hunting through cosmetic surgery is absolutely self despise. Undeniably, some employers join in the "appearance society" , such as banks and other service industries, yet not all employers do so. It is a sign of self-doubt or self-contempt to do job-oriented face work deliberately. Confidence is revealed when with the opinion: It’s OK you are in the "appearance society". It’s OK you look down upon me. If I’m not needed here, other places will need me. I won’t be afraid of job hunting since I am equipped with true skills and genuine knowledge. It is more important for students when finding a job to be self-confident and honest, to know themselves and to make earlier plans, while many students ignorantly think that all obstacles in job hunting will be wiped out after "face changing". It is to be the biggest joke in the world.

Is It Necessary for Graduates to Turn to Plastic Surgery for an Advantage in Job Interview?
The prospect for those on the lookout for jobs is bleak enough, with a large number of graduates battling it out for a limited number of positions. This tight competition has sparked the phenomenon that the workplace has seen a surge in the quantity of plastic surgeries. As to this trend, people’s opinions vary greatly.
There are quite a number of people regarding plastic surgery as an effective approach to improve their competitiveness in job hunting. To begin with, they maintain that appearance plays a vital role in job interviews. The better the applicant looks, the better chances he stands in the interview. Besides, better appearance boosts one’s confidence so that they can perform well in the job interview. However, some other people strongly disapprove of this approach. They argue that academic performance, inner qualities and communication skills matter more than appearances in job interviews. What’s more, those who resort to plastic surgery show a lack of self-confidence, which is the key to effective communication with the interviewers. By no means does plastic surgery enhance one’s performance in the job interview.
Taking the views from the two sides into account, I’m inclined to agree with the latter. Firstly, plastic surgery is not completely guaranteed in terms of safety and success. The interviewees are taking a great risk to undergo an operation for the sole sake of a higher nose or bigger eyes. Secondly, I stick to the firm belief that when it comes to job interviews, what matters most is the interviewee’s overall competence, including academic backgrounds, interpersonal skills as well as management capabilities. Therefore, the one who stands out in the job interview is the one who integrates all those skills, instead of the one who triumphs in terms of physical appearance. Last but not least, I maintain that those who rely on plastic surgery to do the trick in job interviews are either in severe lack of self-confidence or too afraid to admit their competitive disadvantages.
To conclude, I think it’s irrational for graduates to resort to plastic surgery as a way to stand out in a job interview. Not only does plastic surgery fail to solve that core of the matter, but also it will lead to problems in the long term, considering the safety and reliability of the surgery. Therefore, as the saying goes, think twice before you leap.
