My Views on Working from Home
Recently a heated discussion about work-from-home policies has been raised. Some people believe that it raises employees’ productivity as much time traveling is saved, others hold that it decreases the working efficiency. In my opinion, working from home is not a good choice because it reduces working enthusiasm, efficiency of cooperation and productivity.
First, working from home will decrease working enthusiasm. In the workplace, employees are working in the least disturbed environment, and they are enthusiastic about work. However, when they work at home, there are many trifle things and much noise, and they cannot concentrate on their work. Such noise upsets them and make them less enthusiastic. For example, when I was an intern at Ipsos consulting Company, I was more willing to work in the Company than finish work at home. Not only because working at home was lonely, but also there were too many disturbing things upsetting me, such as classmates unexpectedly visited me and I was really both happy and upsetting. Therefore, working in the workplace is better to raise employees’ enthusiasm.
Second, working from home is not helpful to improve efficiency of cooperation. Although the development of Internet and instant communication technology greatly facilitates the communication, face-to-face talk is still the most effective way. Especially in teamwork, communicating face to face can vastly improve the efficiency corporation, while communicating on the Internet probably go beyond the topic and thus consume much time. Therefore, working in the workplace is more helpful for cooperation and coordination.
Last but not least, working from home will decrease productivity. Some people argue that employees do not have to commute to work, and it raises productivity. However, employees will not work earlier than when they work in the company. Employees appreciate the policies because they have more relaxing time rather than working time. Besides, some employees are weak in self-control, and they may work with game or video on since they are no longer supervised. As a result, the productivity is decreasing.
In a word, working from home will lower employees’ working enthusiasm, reduce their efficiency of coordination, and decreased productivity. Companies need further serious consideration if they want to put remote working policy into practice.
