On Surviving in the Ocean of Information
When the Internet first came to China, people accepted it wholeheartedly and regarded this wonder of high-tech as an omnipotent tool. But after about 20 years, people start to complain about problems from the Internet, such as wasting time and spreading improper content. This is also true for college students. The Internet has given them convenience in life and study, but it has also brought much trouble.
As I see it, the biggest Internet disaster for college students is that it offers too much information, and it is high time that they started to cope with the problem.
Although information is of vital importance, the Internet has provided students with so much information that it becomes harmful.
As there is virtually unlimited amount of information about virtually unlimited topics on the Internet, most students have developed the habit of "logging on the net" to look for information for any topic. Because the search engine often comes up with thousands of items, students have to spend much more time than in conventional methods to find the information that is really useful. Sometimes, they may even spend several hours without finding anything of value.
Therefore, the large amount of information only means that students have to spend unnecessarily more time.
Over-supply of information from the Internet can also undermine students’ intellectual ability.
Many students regard the Internet as a symbol of advanced technology, and tend to regard everything from the Internet as real and better. This prevents them from applying conventional standards to examining the quality of the information they find on the net.
Besides,
as finding information is made unnecessarily exhausting, many students simply put whatever they find into their assignment.
Worst of all,
easy access to information has let some students become intellectually lazy: they just copy from the net rather than create their own ideas. Therefore, the Internet has made some students stop thinking, which goes exactly against the purpose of education.
There may be some methods to lessen the harmful effect of this problem. First-ly,
before you log on, you must clarify your objective, that is, you must know exactly what you want. This can prevent distraction from much irrelevant information.
Secondly,
you should learn some basic skills in information evaluation. For example, before deciding on the information, you must check if the source is reliable, if the idea or fact is up to date, and if it is directly related to your topic.
Lastly,
keep your on-line time to a limit. This is simple, but it can pull you from the whirlpool of information so that you can clear your mind and think better.
So it becomes clear that although the Internet can present an ocean of information, some unskilled surfers may get drowned if they stay there for too long and don’t know what they really want.
But it is wrong to abandon the Internet because of this harmful effect. So long as students master some basic skills, they can avoid the harm while enjoying the benefits.
