Challenges of Working and Living in a Developing Country
Living in a developing country can be a challenging and, at times, an uncomfortable experience. However, it can also be rewarding to the development needs of the region and your career. We have done some researches for this issue and want to share with you before you apply for a job and live in a developing country.
[1]First, you will find different customs, religions and cultures. Keep in mind that your way may not be the only way or even the "right" way of communicating across cultural and, [2]in some cases, language barriers can be frustrating. You will experience cultural beliefs which may be very different to your own, from varying perspectives on gender, different working styles through to religious practices. [3]The tip for you is to investigate the country you are applying to before you go—understand the importance of religion, the status of women, hierarchy, common work practices etc.
Second, regardless of whether your assignment is in an urban, industrial or rural area, [4]you should expect basic living conditions. This could quite likely mean limited electricity and hot water, shared facilities including bathroom and toilet, and probably mosquitoes and other "wild" life. [5]You may have to do without some of the entertainment you are used to—DVDs, downloading, pubs and bars. The tip is to prepare entertainment or luxuries you cannot live without before you go, for example, sporting equipment, a fully loaded e-book reader, bed sheets or 50+ sun cream.
[6]Third, one of the most important things to consider is whether you can survive without your family and friends. If you can’t bear the thought of being separated from your family, partner, boyfriend or girlfriend for months at a time then you need to consider whether to apply such a job or think of other ways in which you can get support while in country. The tip is to get involved in country with new support networks—[7]join sporting groups, and attend social events with your colleagues.
Fourth, just like starting a new job and working in a new workplace will be a new and sometimes daunting experience. [8]There may be different working hours, informal communication styles, a lack of resources, more responsibility than you are used to and complex social issues such as gender inequality and corruption. The tip is to research the country and understand that what you will experience when working within the current environment—not changing it overnight, [9]and deal with these difficulties with a flexible attitude.
Fifth and the last, getting sick is a part of living and working in developing countries. A lot of support is provided before, during and after your application to ensure you stay as healthy as possible (vaccinations, personalized medical kits, check ups). [10]The tip is to ensure you follow health advice provided by your organization and local healthcare institutions.
I hope these issues are useful for you when considering and preparing for working and living in a developing country. Thank you.
