Jazz is America’s contribution to popular music. In contrast to classical music, which follows formal European traditions, jazz is 【C1】______ and free-form.
The 【C2】______ of this music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, who were brought to the Southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners and forced to work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died his friends and relatives formed a procession to carry the body to the cemetery.
A band often 【C3】______ the procession. On the way to the cemetery the band played slow, solemn music suited to the occasion. But on the way home the 【C4】______ changed. Spirits lifted. Everybody was happy. Death had 【C5】______ one of their members, but the living were glad to be alive. The band played happy music, improvising on both the harmony and the melody of the tunes presented at the funeral. This music made everyone want to dance. It was an early 【C6】______of jazz.
Music has always been important in Negro life. Coming 【C7】______ from West Africa, the blacks who were brought to America already 【C8】______ a rich musical tradition. This music centered on religious ceremonies in which dancing, singing, clapping, and stamping to the beat of a drum were important forms of musical and 【C9】______ expression. As these people settled into their new life in the plantations of the South, music 【C10】______ its importance. In the fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the hard work go faster. [br] 【C1】
选项
答案
O
解析
根据and后面的形容词free-form“自由形态的”,可知空格处填入形容词。古典音乐的特点是遵循刻板的欧洲传统(follows formal European traditions),句中In contrast to“与……相反”说明爵士乐与古典音乐相反,应该是不刻板的、自由的,spontaneous“自发的”符合语义,故选O。simultaneous“同时发生的”为形近词干扰;rhythmic“有节奏的”放入句中句意也通顺,但该词无法体现出爵士乐与古典音乐的区别,故排除。
