Is interview a reliable means for companies to choose the able? This has been intensely discussed for years. The following are the supporters’ and opponents’ opinions. Unlike some other selection methods, interview produces instant and mutual communication between interviewers and interviewees, which allows interviewers to know better about not only the interviewees’ responding competence but also their interpersonal skills.
Interview enables interviewers to meet interviewees in person. It is quite important because interviewers can use this opportunity to observe interviewees in a more comprehensive way, including their appearances and manners, especially for some positions which requires employees to communicate with other people such as teachers and those who work in the PR section.
Interview makes it possible for interviewers to ask further questions which make the whole selection process more personal-oriented and flexible.

Generally speaking, interviewing job applicants for a position within a company is one of the final steps in the hiring process and this method is believed to be of comparatively high reliability since interviewers can observe interviewees directly. And yet, many employers think some factors may make interview less reliable in evaluating candidates, such as the interviewee’s attitude and the interviewer’s perception.
From my perspective, interview can be fairly reliable in assessing a candidate’s qualifications for a job, but there are some factors that can affect the reliability of the interview. For one thing, since there is no universally accurate answers to subjective questions in the interview, the interviewers may have different expectations for the candidates, which can influence the reliability of the interview to a large extent. For another, interview is not a selecting procedure applicable to all job vacancies. For many jobs, the interviewers can’t adequately assess an applicant’s qualifications, since the position involves skills which are difficult to be measured in an interview. For these types of jobs, there are some other better methods of selection, such as actual operation and skill competition.
On the whole, the interview process can be a tremendous help if interviewers use it effectively, but an interview alone may not be sufficiently reliable to determine a prospective candidate’s qualifications.
