    The dragon boat festival, also known as the Duanwu Festival, falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of China’s lunar calendar. It’s celebrated to remember and memorize the great patriotic poet and minister, Quyuan, who drowned himself in the Miluo River after he was vilified by a dishonest and corrupt prince and dismissed from office.
    On the dragon boat festival, people worship the tradition by eating zongzi and taking part in dragon boat races. Zongzi, a kind of glutinous rice dumplings with ingredients like pork, dates, red beans and so forth, is wrapped with bamboo leaves or reed leaves into the form of a pyramid. Originally , people threw zongzi into the river to worship Quyuan’s ghost. While, dragon boat racing is to rescue and recover Quyuan’s body. Competing teams row their boats forward to a drumbeat racing to reach the finish end first. All of the noise and pageantry create an atmosphere of gaiety and excitement for the participants and spectators alike.
