M: Well, this guy was in court because he was renting apartments that were in terrible condition— no heat, no water, or anything. His building was a mess. So the judge ordered him to live in his own building for a while.
W: Wow! Good idea!
M: He said he should experience the same conditions. And also, if he was living in it, it would ensure that the repairs got done.
W: It’s better than going to prison.
M: Yes. Well, he could have gone to prison, otherwise. But this was a more practical solution.
W: Prison wouldn’t have been as effective. At least this way, the repairs probably got done.
M: I agree. It seems more logical to make the punishment fit the crime.
W: I had a teacher once who believed in that idea.
M: Really?
W: When I was in seventh grade, I hated gym class, and I always tried to get out of it. My friend and I used to hide in the locker room during class. Well, eventually we were caught.
M: What happened?
W: We had to go to the library and do a whole project on physical fitness. We had to get statistics. For example, how many people in the population are overweight, why exercise is good for you ..., things like that. And we had to do it during gym class. Then we had to present it to the class.
M: That’s really good. I bet you learned a lot.
W: Yes, I learned a lot, but I still hated gym.
