答案                  Who Should be Responsible for Our Old People?
    Nowadays more people enjoy longer life expectancy than before. We are actually entering an age of ageing society. With the increasing number of laid-off workers and the increasing cost to maintain the old, many problems have arisen. For example, some old workers of some former state-owned enterprises are laid off before they retire and thus they can get neither their salaries nor their pensions and have to live on their hard-earned savings which are far from enough after their bringing up of their children. Still some, especially those from the country, with no income and no care from their selfish children, have to collect waste to make a living or even beg. To my mind, it is not only a financial problem, but also a problem of what kind of moral standards we want our society to have.
    To solve the financial problem, first, companies or working units concerned should be responsible for their laid-off employees since they have made great contribution to their companies. Then it is the duty of the government to finance the foundation of old-age pension with a part of its tax incomes.
    As to the issue of moral standards, it is an old tradition in China that young people should assume their filial duty to take care of their parents as parents have devoted all their lives to bringing the young up. In whichever age, we should never discard it.
    To sum up, aged people problem is a very complicated issue. To solve this problem, a combined mechanism of collective responsibility and individual responsibility is needed. Only when the problem of the aged is well handled can we enjoy a stable and harmonious society.
