W: Have you thought about the gap year program? I do want to go, but I just wonder what exactly a gap year is.
M: It is a period of time that people use to explore areas of interest. It doesn’t have to last a full year and can be taken at any age, but (19)the typical gap year is taken by students between high school and college.
W: I want to go to college. Should I apply before or after I take a gap year?
M: I would encourage you to apply and get accepted to college before taking a gap year.
W: But what if I have been accepted to a college and want to take a gap year before attending?
M: (20) You should defer the admittance. First send a letter to your college’s director of admissions and outline what you plan to do for the gap year. The admissions committee will evaluate the letter and, in most cases, grant the deferral.
W: Can I still get financial aid and scholarships for college after doing a gap year?
M: (21)If you are qualified for federal financial aid but has deferred college for a year, you will still have to re-apply the following year.
W: Then my chances of receiving it again?
M: If your family’s financial circumstances haven’t changed significantly, you will likely receive aid again.
W: What about some scholarships offered by colleges? M:College scholarships can be held for you until you attend the next year.
W: Are there affordable options for a gap year?
M: Many domestic and international programs charge little to no fees. (22)I recommend you AmeriCorps programs, which provide health care benefits, living expenses, and $5 350 at the end to use toward college.
