问题     For a number of years now, our research studies have shown that the incidence of college students with serious mental health problems has risen significantly in more than 90 percent of the colleges surveyed. These problems generally fall into the areas of clinical depression, generalized anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts. Most of these students are able to be treated successfully within a reasonable amount of time. Something like six percent has problems so severe that they are unable to remain in school and are referred out to community clinics or private practitioners.
Counseling centers are available on almost all college campuses, but only a little over 10 percent of students utilize the services. Most seek help on their own or are referred in by someone on campus who is concerned about them. A very small number of students are mandated (强制执行) to seek counseling because of problematic behavior. Other survey data indicate that many more students have problems that could be helped through counseling but never seek such help. For example, in my 2010 survey of counseling center directors, 87 percent of the students who committed suicide had never sought out mental health services on campus.
Given this reality,it is unrealistic to think that any school could monitor the psychological needs of all its students nor,in my opinion, should they. Even if it were possible to do a clinical assessment of every student who arrives on a college campus our abilities to predict who is likely to harm themselves or others is very low. To mandate mental health services for all those who exhibit eccentric behavior would create a society we would not want to live in.
Nevertheless, the Jared Loughner case is another wake-up call for all of us to be more alert to those around us who appear to be in psychological distress and to do all that we can to get professional help for them. Counseling center staffs have, for several years now, been spending an increasing amount of time working with faculty, administrators and others who have direct student contact to help them better recognize the signs of emotional difficulty.
Colleges and universities don’t have the resources to provide blanket psychological services for all students. However, the current reality is that counseling center staffs are under unusual pressure because of the growing complexity of student problems and the false expectation that counselors can eliminate the possibility of a mentally disturbed student engaging in a random, harmful act. Many campuses are in desperate need of more counseling staff, more psychiatric back-up,and more funding for staff development. But there is some evidence that some colleges and universities have begun to move in this direction. [br] What do we know about college students’ mental problem?

选项 A、More and more college students are gradually aware of them.
B、Most of these students can be treated within certain amount of time.
C、The severeness of their problems forces them to leave the campus.
D、90 percent of the students surveyed have suicidal behaviors.
