    Recent years have been witnessing a trend of re-shooting the four masterpieces of literature in Chinese history, namely, Journey to the West, A Dream of Red Mansions, Water Margin and Three Kingdoms. Filmed as TV series and welcomed by large amounts of audiences at the end of last century, they are now being reproduced and presented on TV. Thus, great controversy has been aroused by this phenomenon.
    People in favor of it insist that the re-shooting efforts are worth praising in many aspects. Not only can the re-shot works absorb the essence of the old versions, but also they can take advantage of modern technology to interpret the scenes that last-century techniques failed to present. However, others hold different opinion, arguing that it’s a waste of money, resources and manpower to re-shoot the classic works. Besides, if continued, this will breed a habitual laziness among TV and film makers that they will cease to be creative and innovative.
    As for me, the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. On the one hand, though classic, the old versions don’t suit the aesthetic taste of modern age in terms of their costumes, settings and effects technology. On the other hand, with modern perspectives being added, the new works are able to enlighten the audience in an entirely different way. So it’s a blessing for us to view and enjoy the re-shot works.
