W: My job’s quite strange really. If someone in England decides to buy a house, they employ me to look at the house and tell them if there are any repairs needed, mainly.
M: I see. Did you have to study for a long time for this job?
W: A very long time indeed. Fortunately that’s now over, and[22]my main job is now inspecting house.
M: Do you get a company car?
W: I’m very fortunate, because a lot of the time I’m driving on the roads.
M: How much holiday do they give you every year?
W: Erm. . . because I’ve been at the company for a number of years, I get five weeks holiday a year.
M: So, what do you think is the best thing about your job, is it the car, the holidays ...?
W: No,[23]it’s in my mind being a detective.[24]Looking at the house where the owners are trying to cover up the defects for obvious reasons.
M: Why would the owners try to cover up the defects?
W: Because they’re trying to sell their house, and they want the buyer to think their house is in very very good condition.
M: Uh ha.
W: My job is to find any repairs that are covered, or not known to the buyers.
M: I see. What’s the worst thing about your job?
W: Erm... it’s looking in people’s drains, or down their toilets.
M: I see. If you were not a chartered surveyor, what would you like to do?
W: Ideally I’d like to be a golfer like Tiger Woods or a professional fly fisherman.
