W: US Consulate in Marseilles, can I help you?
M: Yes, please. I lost my passport this morning. I was on the ferry. I put my backpack under the chair and when the ferry reached the riverbank, it was gone. Everything was gone, except for the camera in my hand. What can I do?
W: I’m sorry to hear that. Stay calm and we will do our best to help you. Now, tell me where you are and who is with you.
M: I am at the local police station. The officers here are very kind to me.
W: I see. Do you have some friends or acquaintances that you can stay with tonight?
M: Hmm, my uncle told me that he had a friend who lives in the city and if I were in trouble, I could try to seek help from him. Maybe I can try to reach him. But I intend to go back to the USA the day after tomorrow and I have already booked the flight. Can I travel without my passport?
W: I’m afraid not. But we can issue a limited-validity passport that can be made more quickly to allow you to return to the USA. Once you return home, you can turn in your emergency passport and receive a full-validity passport.
M: That’s wonderful. How can I get such a passport? Is it expensive?
W: Just the normal passport fees are collected. But you need to fill in some forms and provide a number of documents for the application. You can find the necessary information on the website of US Department of State. Just follow the instructions.
M: OK, I will. Thank you very much.
W: You’re welcome. If you need any help, feel free to contact us.
M: I really appreciate your help.
