    Many Chinese students would shy away and say "My English is very poor" if you would like to communicate with them in English. Though most of them have learned English for at least six years, they can only read and understand English but cannot speak it well. In other word, they become mute when it is time for them to speak English.
    Causes to the mute English are various. Among them, examination-oriented education should be the first to blame. In addition, many Chinese students are afraid of making mistake when speaking English, so they would rather keep quiet. Since mute English blocks the effective communication and cooperation with others, it affects both the students and the nation.
    I think it’s high time to solve the problem. To end mute English, first, students and teachers should all have a correct concept but language study. Second, schools should create a favorable and encouraging language environment so students’ interest in oral practice could be developed.
