Dear Zhang Ying,
    I’m very pleased that you turn to me for my suggestions. As such I’ll give you my suggestions as follows:
    I think that certificates are necessary in that they can serve as a direct testimony of your abilities in certain areas. But certificates can be roughly divided into two categories: those closely related to your major and your possible future career; and those that have nothing to do with either present studies or future development. The former are worth seeking presently whereas the latter are not, for you can not afford enough time for everything.
    By the way, while seeking a certificate, you should take its authority and lasting effect into account. Otherwise, a certificate without authority is useless and a certificate without a lasting effect is likely to become useless when you need it. All these are just what I can suggest to you.
