As a matter of fact, Jane Austen’s novels are all about such trifles as love and marriage, happening in the daily life of some families. This is the reason why many Chinese readers cannot understand why (how) she has enjoyed such a high reputation in the west. But it is not the subject matter that determines whether a novel is profound, or whether it is artistically superior, or deep in thought. Austen’s novels are compared to an olive — the more you chew it, the tastier it will be. This is not only because of her fine language and her creative contributions to the development of fiction writing (the art of novel), but also because of her brisk and lively narration which actually means more than the words have to say. Mrs Smith once said (pointed out) that women writers often tried to alter the existing value system as an effort to change people's view of what is important and what is not important. Perhaps Austen’s novels can teach us how to change our eye and see in a different light those bigger problems (issues) referred to in her narration of the so called trifles.
