The basic difference is that most of the ideas that go into the research paper come from materials found in a library. The paper does not grow out of your personal experience and opinions as some other compositions do.
   Sometimes almost all of the information and ideas that appear in a research paper will come from books, magazine articles, etc. It is your job to find the information and present it in a coherent (连贯的) essay. At other times, you may be required to add your own judgements to the ideas you have collected from different materials. Both may be referred to as a "term paper" or a "research paper", and you should know how to do research as well as how to put together a good paper.
