Centuries ago, mountains were thought to be the home of evil spirits, it was not until 200 years ago that men began to climb the highest peaks (山峰).
At first, men climbed alone or with one or two friends. However, as men climbed higher and more dangerous mountains a team who could work together became very important.
Climbing a giant mountain takes weeks and even months. The men must set up many camps as they climb upward. The climbers must take tons of supplies with them. They need food, warm clothes, and tanks of oxygen (氧气).
In 1950, a team of men from England set out conquering (征服) Mt. Everest. They had to plan carefully. As yet, no man had been able to reach the top.
Mt. Everest was far away from highways and railroads. Men from the neighboring country of Nepal joined the mountain-climbing party. They would help carry the needed supplies through the mountains. Each man could carry 250-pound pack. The people of Nepal had carried goods across those mountains for centuries. A helper who took packs to the highest peeks earned the name "tiger".
Together, the helpers and climbers worked their way up Everest. At last, two climbers went ahead. They pushed on to the top. The highest mountain in the world had been conquered. [br] Men were once afraid to climb high mountains because they thought ______.
