Interviewer: Now, I will give each of you three topics. You will have to choose one from them, prepare for it in one minute and talk about it for one minute. OK? Liming, here are your topics. And here are yours, Liulili. You can make notes on the paper I gave you during your preparation.
All right. Liming, which topic are you going to talk about?
Liming: I’d like to talk about At Managerial skills.
Interviewer: OK. You have one minute to talk. Liulili and I will listen to you. Liulili, after Liming’s talk, you have to ask him a question. Now, Liming, you may start. I’ll stop you at the end of one minute.
Liming: Managers are responsible for seeing that their subordinates perform the work. To do this effectively, managers need to develop certain skills to be successful in a particular position. Firstly, managers must have enough technical knowledge to communicate effectively with their subordinates and superiors although it is not necessary for them to know all the technical aspects of the work they are managing. And they must have enough technical knowledge to gain some credibility with their subordinates. Secondly, creative thinking is very important. Good managers should put all of their smaller decisions in a broader, long-term perspective that benefits the total organization. Last but not least, good managers must have a way with people. That is to say, managers should have some human skills. Getting along well with people is very important.
Interviewer: Thank you. It’s time. Now, Liulili, what is the question you’d like to ask Liming?
Liulili: Liming, how do you get along with your subordinates?
Liming: Well, I communicate regularly with them, understand the needs of them, and show a true appreciation for them.
Interviewer: OK. Now, Liulili, it’s your turn. Which topic have you chosen, please?
Liulili: Corporate culture.
Interviewer: OK. You have one minute to talk. Liming and I will listen to you. Liming, after Liulili’s talk, you have to ask her a question. Now, Liulili, you may start. I’ll stop you at the end of one minute.
Liulili: Different corporations have different corporate cultures. Organizational culture is shaped by the values of the people who start the organization and those who carry on its leadership. Some elements create an organizational culture. Heroes are an integral element of corporate culture. They serve as role models for the other employees in a company. People identify with them and attempt to emulate them. Every company has its heroes. They play a very important role in promoting corporate culture. Rules and regulations are also important to corporate culture because they help reinforce desired behavior, which tell people what they are expected to do for their company and try to guide them along the right path. Corporation need a storyteller, who has been around the organization a long time and has done an outstanding job. He will share some stories with new people. The story is about the same basic theme: work hard and you will succeed.
Interviewer: Thank you. Time is up. Now, Liming, what is the question you’d like to ask Liulili?
Liming: How can a hero help a company develop a corporate culture?
Liulili: Heroes symbolize the organization to the outside world. They represent the very best and motivate other employees to try to have the same good performance as them.
