Woman: When I was offered the manager’s job at the health centre, I asked for support for a formal management qualification. The Head Office agreed and even helped financially. I’ve never worked in the private sector, so I had a lot to learn about business. The course taught me a whole range of specific skills, like thinking strategically, which I can now apply to my work. I’d always avoided finance, but the course really changed my ideas about it, and I hope to specialise in this in the near future.
Speaker 2
Man: Actually my MBA was done on a scholarship after I had left an environmental charity and joined a major company in the chemicals industry. My motivation for doing the course was to get more credibility as a business professional, and I managed to persuade my employer to let me have the time off, though my hopes of persuading them to give me funding came to nothing. The MBA has given me a much greater range of tools and techniques, which are really helpful in my work, as well as a wider perspective on the complexity of running a business today.

Woman: I was awarded a prize for being the best student in my year, and I funded myself entirely on the MBA. Well, partly, in fact, by tutoring students on lower-level business courses. I previously worked as an international marketing consultant for a tyre manufacturer, but felt I needed a broader understanding of how businesses work. The company kept my job open for me, and now I can see how my own discipline fits into a broader context. The MBA was a big financial commitment, but I’m sure it’ll pay for itself in the long term.
Speaker 4
Man: I worked for a local charity organisation before joining the MBA course at Edinburgh, where I was responsible for a case study that has since been incorporated into the MBA programme. I was then recruited by a management consultant. I like the problem-solving aspect, and helping people. But the voluntary sector is where I’m most interested in focusing my efforts, so it won’t be long before I get back into that area. I don’t suppose the pay will be so good, but I think I’ll find the work more satisfying.
Speaker 5
Woman: After ten years as a manager for a bicycle manufacturer, which employs about 1,100 people, I took the course because I felt that I had been left behind by developments in management. I needed an understanding of the language of business and a modern management toolkit. I learnt a lot from the course, and I’m using it to shake up the company, and bring it into the twenty-first century. Maybe it would have been a better move to go to a different company, or even a different industry, but I’m happy for the moment.
