Admission to the doctoral program in School of Business is highly competitive at the University of Chicago. About 20 outstanding students with a potential to distinguish themselves in research are admitted each autumn.
   Reviewers evaluate the applicant’s essays, academic background and performance, research interest and potential, prior exposure to academic research, strength of recommendations, and standardized test scores.
   The application deadline is December 15 of each year. The application for Fall 2018 is currently closed. The application for Fall 2019 will open by September 1, 2018. International applicants are encouraged to submit their information earlier. Applicants will be notified of their admissions decision by e-mail no later than early March. Admitted students enroll the following autumn.
   Applicants must hold a four-year bachelor’s degree from an accredited university. Non-US residents should look at the list of degrees recognized by the University of Chicago as acceptable equivalents.
   This program trains prospective scholars to become highly skilled and innovative researchers. This is a full-time course of study. Most students take five years to complete degree requirements and defend their respective thesis. Students begin active research at an early stage and work closely with faculty throughout the program. They are also quickly drawn into the school’s intellectual environment by participating in workshops, where the work of fellow researchers is vigorously discussed and debated.
   As with the other degree programs, the PhD curriculum is highly flexible. Within the scope of general requirements, students can design programs to suit their individual research interests and educational backgrounds.
