答案             The Proportion of Women’s Income to Men’s Income
    The graph depicts the changes of the proportion in income between men and women in 1990 and 2000 in China. It is showed that in 1990 women earned only 77. 5% of what men earned, and in 2000 that proportion dropped further to 70. 1%. That is to say, although more and more women join the workforce, and most of them perform as well as men, they earn much less than their male counterparts; and the situation is getting worse. The income gap, to a great extent, reflects the disparity of social positions between men and women.
    It is not difficult to know the underlying reason for this gap. Although the social status of women has been greatly promoted since the People’s Republic of China was founded, women are still being discriminated especially in employment. The companies prefer men to women because women are thought to be inferior physically and "useless" when they should enjoy the maternity leave. So, it’s nothing unusual that women are short paid even though they do the same job as men. In addition, the traditional view on the gender roles is still prevailing. Women are expected to stay at home taking care of babies and household chores. This view takes great toll on the part of females. Many girls, especially girls in the rural areas, are deprived of the rights to education. As a result, when they go into the labor market, they can only get low-paid jobs.
    In my opinion, some measures could stop the discrimination against women. One of the most important measures is for the government to pass and enforce the new labor law, protecting the women’s rights. Moreover, the companies should be encouraged to employ female workers by getting benefits both spiritually and financially. At last, the whole society should establish the atmosphere of ensuring the same rights between men and women.
