I’d like to talk about Zheng He, a great navigator in Chinese history.

He lived in the Ming Dynasty in around late 14* century to early 15th century. Despite the fact that he was a eunuch servant for the royalty when he was young, he seized the opportunity to study hard and later became a knowledgeable person that won the trust of the emperor. He became a strategist and adviser for the emperor and helped him win battles and manage domestic affairs. What he was remembered by later generations for was his seven great expeditions to the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean in early 15th century. Under the Emperor’s command, Zheng He led a huge crew and ships to visit many countries far away from China, promoting cultural exchange with different nations. His expeditions adopted the most cutting-edge navigation technology at that time. Today Zheng He still has great influence on some Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia where temples are built in memory of his achievement.
I think Zheng He is a navigator as great as his contemporaries Columbus and Magellan. I admire his intelligence and grit in achieving these large-scale voyages over so many years. He and his crew overcame millions of difficulties with weather, technology and cultural barriers. However, I also feel pity for the purpose of his travel. The emperor wanted Zheng He to travel to faraway countries just to advertise the great power of the Ming Empire, so that other countries would pay tribute to this great Asian empire. If Zheng He’s seven expeditions were to promote trade or to establish cultural ties with other nations, the Ming Empire might benefit more rather than feeding its complacency. And that might even alter the course of Chinese history, but we’ll never know.
