I want to bring up the historic event that happened in the Qing Dynasty back in 1898, which was known as Hundred Day’s Reform. After the defeat in the Sino-Japanese war, Qing government was under great pressure from the imperialist powers outside. And the domestic rebellions were also against its corrupt ruling. Some progressives saw the need to reform, not only in industry and military, but also in the political system. Major reform advocates included scholar Kang Youwei, Liang Qichao, and Tan Sitong. They appealed to the then emperor to embark on a thorough reform all over the country, involving a series of social and institutional changes. The reform was well-intended, but unfortunately, it met with strong opposition from the conservatives in the royal family and in court. It ended with a coup led by the then empress dowager who had the emperor under house arrest and 6 prominent reformists executed.
I was at first impressed by the name of this reform, wondering what kind of reform that lasted for such a short time could be written in Chinese history. Later, I realize that it’s a critical event because it proved that it was impossible to change the political system under Qing government’s ruling, not only because of the corruption and weakness of the feudalistic power, but also of the interference of the foreign invaders. Meanwhile, by reading the articles and poems written by the reformists, I also see the courage and patriotism of the open-minded scholars at that time. They sacrificed their lives to fight against the oppression of the conservatives. Their effort to introduce advanced ideas from the West promoted modernization in China at the turn of the 20th century.
