In this section of the test, you will be asked to choose between two opinions. You will need to answer the question by supporting your choice with examples. After the question, you will have 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak.
Some university students choose to study a variety of subjects in order to have a broader education. Other students focus on one subject in order to have a greater understanding of a particular topic. Which style of education do you think is better for students and why?
Question 3
Reading
In this question, you will read a short passage about a campus situation and then listen to a talk on the same topic. Then you will answer a question using information from both the reading and the talk. After the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Read the following announcement about the university’s plan to change the students’ meal plan. You will have 45 seconds to read the announcement. Begin reading now.
Changes to the Meal Program
The university has decided to eliminate breakfast from its student meal plan. This is being done as a cost-saving measure. The cafeteria was preparing breakfast for all the students who signed up for the plan, but fewer than sixty percent of the students were eating the meals. In the past, the cost of the meal plan included three meals per day. However, breakfast will now only be offered on a pay-as-you-go basis. The price of the meal plan will reflect these changes immediately.

Question
The man expresses his opinion of the university’s plan to remove breakfast from the student meal plan. State his opinion and explain his reasons for holding that opinion.
S1 I can’t believe they are doing this. What a terrible idea! Doesn’t the university realize all the problems this is going to create? It might save a few dollars, but that’s hardly worth it considering the consequences.
S2 What do you mean? This is actually going to solve a bunch of problems. The university was just wasting time and energy making meals that were never eaten. I’m sort of happy, actually, because now my meal plan will cost less. I never eat breakfast anyway.
S1 Trust me. There are going to be problems. It says that about sixty percent of the students were actually eating the meals. Let’s say that half of them just stop eating breakfast all together because the university doesn’t offer it anymore. So, thirty percent of the meal plan students are going to be in their morning classes falling asleep because they’re so hungry. Not eating properly makes it impossible to study. A lot of people are going to be getting lower grades.
S2 We might be hearing more stomachs growling in class, but if students really want breakfast, they only need to buy it, right? You can still get breakfast, when you want to, but you have to pay for it. And, the system is better because you only pay on the days you actually eat.
S1 The system is worse. A lot of the students on the meal plan are actually scholarship students. The meal plan is covered by their scholarships. If they have to pay for breakfast every morning, that money comes directly out of their pockets. The scholarships are not going to change just because of a change in the meal plan. Sure, some of them have jobs, but they can’t work too much. If their grades start to slip, they will lose their financial support and have to leave university completely.
S2 You’re making it sound worse than it really is. Sure, it might be a problem for a few people, but for the majority of students, the new plan is actually a good thing.

答案
The man thinks the university is making a mistake by removing breakfast from the student meal plan. His first concern is that a lot of students will stop eating breakfast. He assumes that out of the roughly sixty percent of the students on the meal plan who actually eat breakfast, about half of them will stop. They will be too hungry to think in class and they will begin to earn lower grades. He also argues that the changes to the plan will be a problem for the scholarship students, because only the meal plan is covered by their financial support, not extra meals. They wilt have to pay for extra meals themselves. This will be especially hard for them because they can only work a limited number of hours during the term. If they work too much and their grades begin to fall, they could lose their scholarships.
