Performance Moving to Off-campus Theater
The arts department has made a decision to do the performance in an off-campus theater because the theater on campus is too small to put on a good show. Due to the development of the school’s theater arts, the performance needs more space and better equipment to produce a show with fantastic sound and stage effects. The off-campus theater provides an excellent stereo system and a complex stage which can elevate the bottom floor to the stage, making it easy to change stage settings.
   Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The woman expresses her opinion about the school policy. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
M: Hey, Lucy, I heard that the arts department will put on their performances in an off-campus theater.
W: Yes, and I don’t think this is a smart decision.
M: Why don’t you think so?
W: Well, first, I don’t think students are willing to go off-campus to see the show. The theater is 10 miles from the campus and the bus only comes once an hour on the weekends. On weekdays, I would rather study than take the bus to watch a late show that’s so far out of the downtown area.
M: I don’t want to go that far to see a show either, but they say that the theater has a better stereo system and a complex stage.
W: This equipment is nice, but I don’t think it’s easy to handle these new toys.
M: What do you mean?
W: Since most plays are produced and performed by students from the arts department, they still lack professional experience in many things.
M: You mean they are not familiar with the advanced equipment?
W: Yes, some students I know have just started to learn the basics of theater: they don’t know how to control complex sound effects and move the stage according to plot development.
M: They are just students.
W: Imagine they are giving a show, but are not good at moving the stages. The show will become chaos with the wrong stage placement.
