On-Campus Art Fair
I am writing this letter to urge all students to help organize an on-campus art fair here at the university. There are two reasons that make this project highly worthwhile. First, it will give the school’s many talented art students an opportunity to display their works to people who appreciate art. Second, the money collected can be donated to help build a badly-needed new classroom building. So let’s go guys! Help art and help the University!
Now hear a conversation between two students.
Question: The woman expresses her opinion toward the proposal of organizing an art fair on campus. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
M: Hi Wendy. Did you read the letter in the paper about that guy who wants to organize an Art Fair?
W: Yeah, but I think it’s silly. A waste of time and effort.
M: Why? I like the idea.
W: Well, here is my point. The university already has one art show. An art fair would just repeat the same thing. A lot of people like art. But to have two shows just means that there’d be half as much interest in each. We’re just repeating the same thing.. .like I’m repeating myself now.
M: Oh, maybe...
W: Besides, what’s this about donating the money? Did anyone ask the artists or art students what they think? A lot of local artists are poor. They don’t want to donate their money to the building project. Students aren’t rich either. It’s not fair just to take their works and sell them like that!
